Soundpainting Barreiro IMPROV BIG BAND

On November 22nd, the Augusto Cabrita Municipal Auditorium will host, for the first time on its stage, a multidisciplinary improvisation show – the Soundpainting Barreiro IMPROV BIG BAND. A show not to be missed, featuring music, dance, and theatre – entirely improvised!

Soundpainting is a universal gestural language of real-time composition, created in 1974 by Walter Thompson in Woodstock, New York. Designed for artists of all disciplines – musicians, actors, dancers, visual artists – it continues to evolve, already boasting more than 1500 different signs (as of 2023). Through these gestures, the soundpainter (the composer) directs and shapes the performance in the moment, indicating in real time what each performer should do, thus constructing a unique and unrepeatable work.

After a week-long workshop, we will showcase our work in an evening full of improvisation and creativity. The workshop and conducting of the orchestra on the day of the show will be led by Mário Abel. For the first time, Barreiro will host a show created entirely with this innovative language, bringing together artists from Barreiro in a night that promises to be intense from a creative point of view and truly dazzling.
